Belgian Beer

chimay.jpgWe love beer! That’s got to be one of the best parts about the PNW, all the local variety. When we decided to become a international travel pub featuring mussels, we saw a great opportunity to showcase some of the world’s finest beers here to the Portland locals whom we knew would appreciate them. So the birth of our Belgium Beer menu was born. We have a wide variety of style in our menu, everything from Lambic to Saison to Sour to Tripel. One point that we’re particualry proud of is that we carry all 5 of the Belgian Trappist Beers available in the USA. For a beer to qualify for this category, the entire production process must be carried out by, or supervised by, Trappist monks on the site of the monastery. Only seven monasteries currently meet this qualification, six of which are in Belgium and one in the Netherlands. The current Trappist producers are Achel, Chimay, La Trappe (the Netherlands), Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle, and Westvleteren.

deliriumtremens.jpgWhat’s a good Belgian beer without the proper glass? Virtually every Belgian beer has a branded glass. Beyond the basic shape of the glass (wide-mouth goblet, curvaceous tulip glass, tall pilsner, etc), each glass is imprinted with a logo or name. Rumor has it that the different basic shapes are designed to enhance the flavor and aroma of the particular beer, owing to the different paths that the bubbles travel up the sides of the glass.

BE WARNED.., if you want to use the glass at our pub, be prepared to give up a shoe for collateral in our famous shoe basket. Just ask your bartender and enjoy your Belgian Beer as much as we do.
